I Must Tell the Flowers/I Must Tell the Trees

            after Richard Kraft’s Performance Piece 100 Hundred Walkers

A sandwich board I wear,

walking avenues, says nothing

as passers-by pass by.

Should they turn, look

back, ask—I would say

(if allowed to speak):

Some Gambian pouch rats,

so called: fill their cheeks

with nuts and other treats;

bury them, later to retrieve,

relying solely on scent;

known for Olympian size,

are trained in Tanzania,

live secret lives, superheroes

sniffing out TB and buried

land mines.  Let’s talk

mystery.  And marvel.
